Choosing a recruiter
How does talent recruitment work in the UK?
Talent recruitment in the UK means finding, screening and hiring candidates for a role. Employers can advertise directly on job boards, use a flat-fee recruitment service, or instruct a contingency agency. Contingency agencies typically charge 15–25% of first-year salary, payable only if you hire. Flat-fee managed search starts from £1,500 +VAT for roles up to £30,000. Most UK roles fill in around 6–10 weeks when managed properly.
# How does talent recruitment work in the UK?
If you need to hire, you have three broad routes: advertise the role yourself, use a flat-fee recruitment service, or instruct a traditional contingency agency. Each has genuine advantages and genuine drawbacks. This page sets out what each route involves, what it costs, and where one option is plainly better than another.
The three routes
1. Advertise yourself
You write the advert, post it on job boards, filter the applications and conduct interviews. You pay only the job board fees. This is the cheapest route if your role is straightforward and you have time to manage the process. See our job advertising packages if you want help placing adverts without handing the whole search over.
2. Flat-fee managed recruitment
A recruiter writes the advert, posts it, screens applicants, interviews candidates and presents you with a shortlist. You pay a fixed fee regardless of salary, not a percentage. This is where we operate. Our fees are set by salary band:
| Salary band | Managed-search fee |
|---|---|
| Up to £30,000 | £1,500 +VAT |
| £30,000 – £44,999 | £2,000 +VAT |
| £45,000 – £59,999 | £3,000 +VAT |
| £60,000 – £79,999 | £4,000 +VAT |
If we do not fill the role, you receive a 100% refund — not a replacement candidate, an actual refund.
3. Contingency agency
A traditional agency finds candidates and charges a percentage of first-year salary if you hire. The UK market rate is broadly 15–25% of first-year salary, though this varies by sector and seniority. On a £45,000 role that is £6,750–£11,250. Agencies on this model usually offer rebate periods rather than refunds, so check the terms carefully. Our answer on what a typical recruitment agency fee is explains the difference in more detail.
Where a contingency agency genuinely beats flat-fee: passive-candidate searches at senior or specialist level, where the recruiter's network does most of the work and advertising alone is unlikely to reach the right people. If your role is niche or the talent pool is genuinely small, a percentage-fee agency with a strong specialism may be worth the cost.
What the data says about how recruitment plays out
Across the 46 roles we have filled and publish data on, covering 18 sectors:
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median time to fill | 42 days |
| Middle 50% of roles | 29–68 days |
| Fastest fill | 14 days |
| Slowest fill | 169 days |
| Candidates sourced and screened (total) | 1,542 |
| Candidates presented to client (total) | 235 |
| Hires made (total) | 51 |
| Median candidates worked per role | 26 |
The funnel matters. From 1,542 sourced and screened, 235 were presented to clients and 51 were hired. That ratio — roughly 30 screened per hire — is why a recruiter's screening work saves you time even when the advert produces plenty of applications. You can see the full dataset at /recruitment-data.
Which route suits which situation?
- You have capacity to manage applications yourself and the role is broadly advertised → post it yourself. Our Standard package at £399 +VAT or Premium at £499 +VAT covers multi-board distribution without a managed service.
- You want the search managed but cannot justify a 15–25% fee → flat-fee managed recruitment is designed for this. Call us on 0161 327 2895.
- The role is senior, niche or requires passive-candidate outreach → a specialist contingency agency may be the better call. We will tell you honestly if that is the case.
- You are unsure whether to recruit or restructure internally → our recruitment health check is a good starting point.
A note on VAT
All UK recruitment fees are subject to VAT. Every price on this page is quoted ex-VAT with +VAT beside it, which is standard practice. There is more detail on VAT and recruitment fees here.
FAQs
What does "talent recruitment" actually mean?
It is a broad term covering everything from writing a job advert through to making an offer. Some agencies use it to mean proactive sourcing of candidates who are not actively job-hunting. Others use it to mean any structured hiring process. Ask any supplier exactly what their service includes before you agree to anything.
How long does UK talent recruitment typically take?
Based on our published data, the median time to fill a role is 42 days. Half of roles fill between 29 and 68 days. A small number take longer — our slowest recorded fill was 169 days, on a specialist role with a narrow candidate pool. Sector, salary and location all affect this. See time-to-fill benchmarks by sector for more detail.
Should I use a recruiter or post the job myself?
It depends on how much time you have and how specialist the role is. For a role where candidates are actively searching and the job boards reach them, posting yourself — or using a low-cost advertising service — is often enough. For roles where you need someone to screen 20–30 applicants before you see a shortlist, or where candidates are not actively looking, a managed service or agency saves you significant time. Neither is always right.
What happens if a flat-fee recruiter does not fill the role?
With us, you receive a 100% refund. No partial credit, no rolled-over balance, an actual refund. Not every flat-fee provider works this way — some offer a repeat search instead. Check the guarantee terms before you sign anything.
