Quantity Surveyor / Estimator
Role Overview
We are seeking a Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to join our commercial team.
The successful candidate will support the delivery of construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects through a combination of estimating, cost control, and commercial management.
This role covers both pre-contract and post-contract responsibilities, ensuring strong financial control across multiple projects.
Based in our Tredegar office, you will work closely with project and site teams to produce accurate costings, support procurement activity, and maintain effective cost management throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Tendering
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects
- Produce tender submissions, including Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and schedules of rates
- Review subcontractor and supplier quotations to ensure accuracy and competitiveness
- Use estimating systems and tools (including Construction AI platforms) to support tender preparation
- Assess project risks and apply appropriate contingencies within bids
Cost Planning & Cost Control
- Develop and maintain project budgets from pre-construction through to completion
- Monitor project expenditure and report variances against approved budgets
- Provide cost advice to support informed decision-making throughout project delivery
Contract Administration
- Prepare and assess interim valuations and progress payments
- Review subcontractor applications and claims
- Manage variations, including assessment of cost and programme impacts
- Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and requirements
Procurement & Commercial Management
- Support the selection and appointment of subcontractors and suppliers
- Issue purchase orders and maintain procurement schedules
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and commercial agreements
- Provide commercial guidance to site and project teams to support cost efficiency
Skills & Attributes
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Solid understanding of construction methods, materials, and sequencing
- Good working knowledge of construction contracts (JCT essential; NEC/FIDIC desirable)
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to manage workload across multiple concurrent projects
Role Details
- Location: Tredegar (office-based)
- Working Pattern: Full-time or 3–4 days per week (part-time considered, pro-rata)
- Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 (FTE), depending on experience
- Travel: South Wales and South West England (up to Lands End), with mileage-based allocation; pool van provided for business use
